Numbers plunge in cattle yards
24 Apr 2007

A few months ago in the cattle yards at Wagga Wagga in southern New South Wales, cattle were brimming over at the weekly sales with up to 6,000 sales a day. Manager Paul Martin said that it was about twice the average of 3,000 a sale. But yesterday’s sale saw just 1,700 cattle pass through the yards. The full effect of the drought on the nation’s herds and flocks may now only be starting to be felt.
