Turning saltbush into a positive
18 May 2007

Dryland salinity is a problem that affects about five million hectares of land across Australia. Research is being conducted by PhD student Dianne Mayberry into why sheep have trouble digesting saltbush even though they enjoy eating the plant. Diane thinks that there may be a way to improve the digestion of the plant so that it is energy positive rather than negative as it is currently, perhaps with a supplementary feed such as barley.
