Agforce holds out on water plan
20 Jun 2007

Attempts yesterday by the federal Environment and Water Resources Minister, Malcolm Turnbull, to calm concerns of farmers that metering would be introduced on stock and domestic bores have failed. Members of the Queensland farmers' group Agforce remained unconvinced by reassurances and want protections written into the legislation. Mr Turnbull said that protections already existed in state legislation but that there would be some instances where metering was required. "Let me confirm that there is no intention to require metering of stock and domestic bores, except in special circumstances where a particular groundwater system is under stress or where there are local disputes about water sharing" he said.
