Counting 'food miles'
21 Jun 2007

Meat and Livestock Australia is undertaking a project to quantify the resources required to produce meat, including water and energy. The research is being conducted as consumers become more aware of the environmental impact of production of different food options. The British supermarket Tesco has started showing their customers how many 'food miles' were required for certain products. MLA chairman, David Palmer, said "Figures out there about how much water is needed to produce a kilo of meat are highly unreliable. A competent industry provides answers before questions are put to them. The work we're doing will allow us to respond in advance."
