US reviewing farm subsidies
27 Jun 2007

With the Unites States government considering extending, and in some cases increasing subsidies to American farmers, Agriculture Minister Peter McGauran has gone to the US to argue Australia’s case. While commodity prices are high the subsidies have no real effect on the market, but if prices fall then there would be significant impacts on Australia. Our main hope is another version of the bill that redirects the subsidies away from staples such as cotton, wheat, sugar and dairy, to land stewardship programs, public nutrition, biofuels and specialty crops. Mr McGauran is also expressing concern over US moves to make country-of-origin labelling for beef mandatory and a levy on imported dairy products.
