Outlook positive but conditional
1 Aug 2007

Things are looking up for the agricultural sector with the Westpac-National Farmers Federation index for July saying conditions are "the most robust we have seen since the 1980's". While livestock production will drop by around 5 per cent, this is more than offset by bumper grain conditions. Predictions are for the winter crop to reach 37 million tonnes, up by a massive 21 million tonnes on last year. Follow-up rain is still needed to get the crop to harvest and key growing areas in Western Australia and Queensland are still in drought.
