Left-over cane could feed livestock
3 Aug 2007

Excess sugar cane from growers in the Ord region of Western Australia is being sent to Victorian dairy farmers as there has been little demand from drought-affected areas of WA. The late start to the season has meant there is likely to be around 70,000 tonnes of surplus sugar cane that can be mulched and fed to livestock. Sugar growers say that, unless there is some kind of freight subsidy, they probably wouldn’t be able to get it to WA farmers and the cane would need to be mixed with other feeds such as hay and grain which are in short supply.
