Red tape strangling farmers
7 Aug 2007

A report by agribusiness consultants Holmes Sackett and Associates has attempted to quantify the impact of government regulations on farmers. Their analysis shows that 14 per cent of net profit, is used to comply with regulations on transport, the environment, food safety and other matters. The average farm spends $22,542 on compliance but this rises to $34,367 for farms that have a mix of livestock and cropping. For grazing farms that generate less than 15 per cent of their income from cropping the annual average cost was $14,134.
