Pastures drain water supply
15 Aug 2007

NSW is the nation's biggest user of water for irrigation accounting for 41.2 per cent while Western Australia used the most water per hectare at 5.1 megalitres. Pasture for grazing was the biggest user of irrigation water nationally, consuming 26.5 per cent of the total. This was followed by cotton at 16.1 per cent, rice at 11.3 per cent and sugar cane with 10.2 per cent. In total 11,905 gigalitres of water was used for agriculture with 91.1 per cent used to irrigate crops and pastures. The cotton and rice industries have already greatly improved their efficiency and the cotton industry has promised to double its efficiency over the next decade.
