Battle over marsh water
15 Aug 2007

Cotton and citrus growers in the Macquarie Marshes have accused graziers of destroying the area by stealing water for their cattle. Irrigators claim that photographs taken after rain last month show that graziers are using legal and illegal levees to flood their land. The graziers have responded by saying that the structures are mostly legal and that the water used is not being stolen because their land is part of the marshes. The marshes cover an area of around 200,000 hectares north of Warren in NSW. The government is buying back irrigation water licences from irrigators at a cost of millions of dollars in an attempt to get more water back into the marshes.
