First case of horse flu 24 Aug 2007
The first case in Australia of the highly contagious equine influenza virus was identified yesterday at Eastern Creek, west of Sydney. The discovery has meant that 52 horses are now quarantined at Eastern Creek, as well as another 27 at the Victorian quarantine centre Spotswood, some of which had contact with the horses now in Sydney. The quarantine will be maintained for at least a month and the chances of the virus escaping into the wider thoroughbred population are thought to be minimal.
