Hot sheep in WA
3 Sep 2007

Three cases of theft, totalling 1,600 sheep, have been reported in the mid-west of Western Australia in the past fortnight. Police believe that the thefts are being carried out by drought-hit farmers who need to rebuild their flocks but have little money available. Farmers have been warned to ensure that all sheep are marked with permanent identifiers and to keep track of their numbers. Detective-sergeant David Byrne from the rural crime squad said "Speaking to farmers recently, many of them say they have had large numbers of sheep go missing at one time or another but have never reported it".
