Red tape still tangled 13 Sep 2007
The Productivity Commission has said that reforms aimed at reducing red tape for farmers and other primary producers are taking too long and that the sector is not seeing any tangible results. The National Farmers Federation has welcomed the report as acknowledgement of the problem but said that it was just the start of the process. NFF economist Charles McElhone said "Our studies show that regulation has been costing farmers as much as 14 per cent of their profits". Mr McElhone identified better co-ordination of transport regulation as a big issue saying, "there is a greater cross-border transfer of goods than ever before. Discrepancies in regulation of how livestock are loaded onto trucks and high mass limits is a real problem for contractors delivering services on either side of the borders".
