Crop failure will increase grocery bill 14 Sep 2007
Prices for many foods are set to rise as the country faces the failure of winter grain crops. Crops in some areas could still be saved if there is rain in the next two weeks but NSW Primary Industries Minister, Ian MacDonald, said that the state was at "crisis point". "We believe that if we don't get rain within the next week to two weeks, we will have a substantial crop failure in NSW," he said. This would have a flow-on effect to prices for chicken, eggs, pork, dairy and beef as high grain prices make production uneconomical. World prices for grain are being driven up in part due to the United States mandating the use of ethanol, made from corn, in petrol.
