Sheep are part of our environment too
5 Oct 2007

A claim for compensation has been rejected following a court decision that sheep are part of the environment and that their welfare is a suitable matter for environmental protection. The Victorian Farmer's Federation had brought a case against an environmental activist who had put shredded ham into feeding lots for sheep that were to be live exported to Kuwait. The action was recorded and a press release issued saying that the sheep could not be sent to the Middle East as Muslims cannot eat pork or any products that have had contact with pigs. The sheep were still exported but there were days of delays as authorities tried to decide whether or not the ship could sail. The court found that the action had not prevented or substantially hindered trade and said "farm animals are as much a part of the environment as are wild animals, feral animals, and domestic animals". The decision will be appealed by the VFF.
