Biofuels add to grain shortage
31 Oct 2007

Record grain prices are causing beef, pork and dairy farmers to experience severe trading losses a conference to discuss feed grain has been told. Attending the discussions were representatives of major livestock feed grain user groups, government representatives and other stakeholders who are concerned that the global grain market has entered a new era caused by global demand an unfavourable weather conditions. Feed grain users have called on the government to abandon plans to mandate the use of ethanol in fuel as this is contributing to higher grain costs. Research conducted by the Iowa State University found that food costs in the US had increased by at least $14 billion over 2006-07 due to distortions resulting from government biofuels policies.
