WA beef farmers driven out of business
7 Nov 2007

The high Australian dollar, drought, and increased competition from the eastern states are driving many Western Australian beef producers to cull their herds. The president of the WA Farmers meat section Mike Norton said that prices have fallen to unviable levels and some farmers feared that they would have to leave the industry. According to Mr Norton Australian exports are being undercut in markets such as Japan, South Korea and the US due to the high value of the Australian dollar. Prices for cows at WA saleyards have fallen by 35 per cent since late September and poorer quality cows are fetching just 25 cent per kilo live weight, the lowest price since the 1970's.
