WA farmers push their meat
16 Nov 2007

WA farmers have started a fighting fund, part of which will pay for advertising aimed at encouraging consumers to only buy locally grown red meat. The funds will be used to highlight the impact of imports from eastern states, lobby for better returns, address saleyard collusion and lift processing volumes. Farmers hope that the takeover of Coles by Wesfarmers will prompt the supermarket to use less imported meat but Wesfarmers refused to give any assurances yesterday. A spokesman said that while they understand the issue they needed to run the business in the interest of all stakeholders. A second generation farmer said that he had already been forced to switch a large portion of his farm to blue gum and more would follow if returns did not start covering production costs.
