Haystacks go up in smoke
21 Jan 2008

Unusual weather conditions have increased the incidence of hay sheds spontaneously bursting into flames. In NSW alone there are estimated to have been 400 such blazes but haystacks and haysheds have been spontaneously combusting from northern NSW across to South Australia The phenomena is caused by a combination of summer rains followed by microbial growth and then hot, dry conditions. Large hay bales should have a moisture content of less than 14 to 18 per cent and it is when this level is breached that they become a risk.
