Beef rejected after abattoir cruelty
19 Feb 2008

Health officials in the US have ordered the largest recall of beef on record. The US Department of Agriculture has called for the return of 64,864 tonnes of minced beef produced by a California abattoir that supplies school lunch programs. The move came after a video was circulated showing workers kicking sick cows and using forklifts and electric shocks to make them walk. Cows that cannot walk are at greater risk of mad cow disease so those in the video could not be used, however agriculture officials said that they had already passed pre-slaughter inspection so posed little health risk.< br>
