Shooting spree bags foxes
17 Mar 2008

Farmers in Western Australia have declared war on the fox with the annual cull getting underway. They are estimated to kill 700,000 lambs, cause $200 million damage and devour wildlife every year but hundreds of farmers from Mount Barker in the Great Southern to Koorda in the northern wheatbelt have spent the last two weekends shooting thousands of foxes. Since the coordinated shooting and baiting program started in 2003 it is estimated that 25,000 foxes have been killed, however more needs to be done with the population estimated at 7.2 million. Over $16 million is devoted to management of the introduced pest each year.
