Workers will delay rural recovery 25 Mar 2008
The National Farmers Federation has warned that a shortage of labour is slowing any recovery from the drought. According to the NFF there is a shortfall of 96,000 employees in the rural sector including farm hands, livestock farmers, shearers and heavy equipment operators. To help reduce the problem the NFF has called on the federal government to ease immigration laws and allow Pacific islanders to come to Australia to pick fruit on a seasonal basis. Of particular concern to the NFF is a shortage of managers, administrators and overseers who make up 53 per cent of the agricultural workforce.
