WA lamb laws better than other states 10 Jul 2008
Mutton can''t be sold as lamb in Western Australia according to evidence given to the Senate committee investigating the desirability of a national marketing standard for mutton and lamb. According to Australian standards, lamb becomes mutton when the animal''s incisor teeth begin cutting through the gumbs. Under the WA system, mutton could not be relabeled as lamb without committing criminal fraud said the WA Meat Authority. Safe Food Queensland told the committee that false branding of mutton in that state was treated as a consumer affairs issue.
