Free range definition needed
25 Sep 2008

Free range poultry systems encourage cannibalism amongst the birds says the Australian Egg Corporation. The AEC says poultry are territorial and seek out the weakest among them. Free range producers say cannibalism is caused by overstocking in barn-laid situations and is not a problem in well run free range operations. Consumer group Choice found that large egg producers had redefined the term free-range to suit themselves and recommended that a legally enforceable definition of free-range be introduced.
