Nuffield farming scholarship winners announced 10 Oct 2003
The 2003 Nuffield farming scholarships were announced in early October, with a record 11 Australian recipients named - one more than in 2002. The scholarships are worth about $21,000 each to the winners; they are sponsored by leading agribusiness companies and organised by the Australian Nuffield Farming Scholars' Association.
Recipients of the awards travel overseas for about four months and study a field of particular interest in agriculture, before preparing reports on their findings.
This year's group will spend time in New Zealand, Europe, the US and South-East Asia. They will meet up with some of the other 1,100 Nuffield scholars, who come from the UK, New Zealand, Canada, Ireland, France and Zimbabwe.
The Nuffield Foundation's scholarship program was established in Britain in 1947 and awards 25 scholarships a year, with Australia the second largest recipient. Australian winners for 2003 are: Lake Boga dairy farmer Paul Bethune, and Kaniva grain grower Steven Hobbs, both from Victoria; Charlie Hilton, Bordertown, SA; Brent Alexander, Lockhart, NSW; Phil Longmire, Esperance, WA; Jim Friend, Walgett, NSW; Steven Jaeschke, Keith, SA; Peter Draper, Leeton, NSW; Sandra Kirk, Childers, Queensland; Anthony Hamilton, Forbes, NSW, and Michael McKellar, Morven, Queensland.
