Bush gathers to farewell legend
13 Nov 2003

RM Williams was laid to rest on November 12, as mourners listened to one of his favourite poems. Men on horseback stood by as more than 1,000 friends, family and dignitaries attended a state funeral in Toowoomba to celebrate the life of RM Williams, who died last week aged 95. A casket with his whip, hat and saddle blanket on top was drawn by horse through the streets of Toowoomba.

Reginald Murray Williams was remembered as a renowned bushman, businessman, visionary and the name behind one of Australia's most recognised brands. Beginning in the Gammon Ranges in South Australia, RM Williams established his clothing company in 1932. His elastic-sided boots helped cement his reputation. But he never lost his affinity for the bush and its people.

Mr Cowley, chairman of RM Williams Holdings, told mourners of the special times he spent with RM, sharing stories and chatting by the campfire. Acting Prime Minister John Anderson said Williams epitomised the Australian character. RM's daughter Diane Beer said he loved the space, the smell, the rhythm and the challenges of the Australian outback.

The Australian, 13/11/03, page 2.
