Country women reject Queen 5 May 2004
The Country Women's Association has voted to ban the singing of "God Save the Queen" in halls of towns across New South Wales. The CWA's annual conference yesterday rejected a pro-royal motion that the anthem be enshrined in the association's rules, and opted instead for "Advance Australia Fair" as well as CWA's own official anthem.
"God Save the Queen" has been sung at the end of CWA meetings since 1932.
Two delegates from each CWA attended the meeting and the decision represents the views of thousands of women in towns across NSW.
The annual conference also focused on issues such as staff shortages in country schools, health funding and phone services in the bush.
