Backlash forces retreat on toxic dump 20 May 2004
The Victorian Government has backed down on plans to locate a $200 million toxic waste centre on private land and has instead decided to locate the dump on Crown land at Nowingi, between Ouyen and Mildura. Premier Steve Bracks said yesterday environmental studies had shown problems at two of the three privately-owned sites being considered: the Baddaginnie site, near Benalla, is at risk of flooding and the Pittong site, near Ballarat, has variable water quality and is unsuitable geologically.
At Tiega no problems had been found but the Government had listened to locals' concerns, Mr Bracks said. Residents of the three farming areas that were being considered marched on State Parliament in protest in March. Mr Bracks conceded that his meetings with landholders had influenced the decision to change the dump site from privately-owned land.
