Six NSW councils axed in mergers

Six regional New South Wales councils disappeared yesterday as the State Government forced 13 councils in the central west and near Albury to merge into seven. The NSW Government's aim is to get rid of councils it regards as unviable, but the moves are very unpopular with residents.
The former mayor of Evans Shire near Bathurst, John Byrne, said about 70 per cent of Evans residents had signed a petition opposing the merger. Percy Thompson, the former mayor of Mudgee, said "it's starting to take the local out of local government". He described the decision as a "body blow to the electorate".
The State Government is not touching any councils in Sydney's metropolitan area, but has not ruled out minor boundary changes.
