Ararat trains back on line
12 Jul 2004

More than 10 years after the line was closed, train services to Ararat and Beaufort returned at the weekend. The Ararat line is the second to be restored as part of four re-openings of services that were axed in the early 1990s. Work is expected to begin soon on the re-opening of the Mildura line, parts of which require extensive upgrading. The South Gippsland line is also yet to open, but V/Line has recommenced twice-daily train services to and from Ballarat.

Patronage on the twice-daily service to Bairnsdale, re-opened in May, has increased 10 per cent compared with the number of people who previously used buses.

Herald Sun, 10/7/04.
