Jobs go as clothier strides out 19 Aug 2004
Fletcher Jones, famous for its slacks and jackets, will close its textile cutting rooms at Warrnambool and Mount Gambier in October. It's the latest Australian clothing maker to switch to cheap Asian labour. About 60 long-term employees will lose their jobs with full entitlements, leaving about 13 staff at Warrnambool to distribute textiles made in Geelong to Indonesian factories.
In the 1960s, Fletcher Jones was the Warrnambool district's biggest employer, with 1,100 staff. Many of the current workers have been with FJ for almost 30 years.
Warrnambool factory manager John McCosh said the closure was due to competition from cheap Asian imports and the cost of replacing old technology.
