Jeff strikes blow for the boys while the iron's hot
2 Sep 2004

Jeff Duncan, an 18-year-old from Glen-Esk station in far western NSW, has won the inaugural Bachelor of the Show award at the Wentworth Show. Jeff, a late entry, was the surprise winner after finishing second in his cheese-and-Vegemite sandwich-making and ironing heats. He foiled a bid by three Baird boys to stack the competition. Nigel Baird finished first in his ironing heat, but lost points when his shirt fell off the hanger onto the shearing pavilion floor twice.

During his sandwich-making heat, Nathan Baird finished just ahead of Phil Baird, but substituted a thick layer of margarine for cheese, saying he doesn't eat cheese.

There were 10 contestants, who showed off their bachelors' skills in ironing a shirt, making a sandwich and reciting poetry. Colin Andrews recited a short version of The Man from Snowy River, while Nathan Baird opted for a limerick, The Man from Balmain. Ondrej Saska faltered over his recitation of Futility, by Wilfred Owen.

Jeff Duncan blushed as he was sashed and he thanked his mother for training him for 18 years. The runners-up were Phil Baird and Simon Keenan.

The Wentworth Show, held last weekend, attracted more than 10,000 people over the two days.
