Doctors leaving bush 20 Dec 2006
A new report has found that government incentives to encourage doctors to work in the bush are failing. The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) labour force data has found that that doctors are leaving remote and regional Australia and are not being replaced. Overall, the report found the number of doctors had increased in metropolitan regions but decreased outside the city. Dr Rischbieth, president of the Rural Doctors Association of Australia, said that the best way to deal with the shortage was to set up rural clinical training schools for student doctors, because data strongly indicated that doctors who came from or trained in a rural area were more likely to return there to practise.
