MacTiernan lead contamination minister 4 Apr 2007
The West Australian Premier has appointed Planning and Infrastructure minister Alannah MacTiernan to coordinate the State Government’s response to the lead contamination scare in Esperance. Lead contamination is responsible for the deaths of 4,000 birds and for people having higher than normal amounts of lead in their blood. "Our first priority must be to respond appropriately to health and environmental concerns, particularly those of the residents whose blood tests have shown elevated levels of lead," Ms MacTiernan said. "We will support a Parliamentary inquiry into the management of lead exports by the Port Authority and other agencies and the adequacy of responses to the contamination."
