Lead enquiry begins
1 May 2007

Senior bureaucrats from the Department of Environment and Conservation and Department for Planning and Infrastructure will face heavy scrutiny today as a parliamentary inquiry into the Esperance lead scandal holds its first public hearing. So far figures from the Health Department show heavy metal contamination in the town with 356 of the 1,187 water tanks tested so far exceeding the recommended Australian drinking water guidelines for nickel and 245 exceeding the guidelines for lead.
