Pressure on water pipeline 31 Jul 2007
Residents in rural Victoria are opposing the planned water pipeline between Bendigo and Ballarat as concerns mount that planning for the project is inadequate. The government says that they do not need parliamentary approval for the project and that the work needs to go ahead as quickly as possible to ensure the development of urgent water supply infrastructure for a major regional centre. Eril Rathjen, who lives at Colbinabbin on the route for the Bendigo-Ballarat pipeline, said that locals are increasingly angry about the planned upgrades. "The building of the pipeline has been very disruptive to our farming while the upgrades – intended to ensure some 225 billion litres of additional water each year – are opposed because of fears about reduced water entitlements in a dry year. The local community is going to fight this tooth and nail," she said.
