Rural medical funds to flow more freely 11 Sep 2007
Deputy Prime Minister Mark Vaille has said that the government is considering removing or expanding eligibility criteria for the Rural Medical Infrastructure Fund. The scheme provides grants to local councils of up to $400,000 to purchase medical facilities in an effort to attract doctors to rural areas. When challenged, Mr Vaille denied the move was an example of pork-barrelling in the lead up to the federal election, saying that it was simply an example of the government upholding a commitment to improve rural health and overcome a shortage of doctors.
