Local radio content cuts

The federal government has reduced the local content that rural radio stations must broadcast each day from four and a half hours to three. The Communications Minister, Helen Coonan, said that the rule could place unsustainable costs on some operators and lead to their closure. The Nationals had won the local content provision last year but Senator Coonan said that a report had found that four and a half hours would result in increasing local content in many cases and that a three hour quota was more appropriate. Operators with licence areas covering less than 30,000 people will only need to broadcast 30 minutes of local content each day.
