Acid on Murray mudflats 11 Jan 2008
Residents around the River Murray mudflats are being warned of dangerous acid forming as the mud dries out. While not deemed a significant health risk, if not washed off immediately the acid can burn humans and animals. Acid sulfate is formed when minerals in the mudflats come into contact with oxygen and this is the first time that the phenomenon has been recorded. The affected soil has a yellow colour to it and sometimes there is also a smell associated with it.
