Court imposes stiff fine for land clearing
13 Oct 2004

A Queensland court handed down the most severe fine yet for illegal land clearing, with a Gracemere farmer ordered to pay $100,000 as a sanction for clearing almost 12,000 hectares of land on Moray Downs, Clermont. The cleared land represented the largest area of land subject to a prosecution. The Department of Natural Resources learnt of the clearing in June 2003, and received confirmation via satellite mapping in November. The area cleared included 5320ha of remnant vegetation and 1800ha of endangered vegetation
