Most profitable farmers buy out their neighbours
11 Mar 2005

Average land values for broadacre wheat, sheep and beef farms increased by over 50 per cent in real terms over the last four years, as larger and more profitable farmers bought up smaller and less profitable neighbours. The result is there are fewer farmers and they are running bigger farms. The average area of broadacre farms increased from 3,600 hectares in 1990 to 4,100 hectares in 2001. More than 99 per cent of broadacre farms are run by families.
