Land clearing penalty toughened for recalcitrant cane farmer
24 Mar 2005

A Queensland court ordered a cane farm to pay a fine five times higher than that ordered by a lower court for clearing 13.2ha of a National Park - land he was to hand over for an earlier clearing offence. The Brisbane District Court ordered the Killarney farmer to pay a fine of $50,000, rather than a fine of $10,000. This is the largest fine ever imposed under the Nature Conservation Act. The farmer must also pay compensation of $410,000, to be paid by transfer of 436 hectares of land.
