One dairy farmer in seven wants to sell out
3 Jun 2005

A survey by Dairy Australia's found that 15 per cent of farmers who produce about 10 per cent of the nation’s milk want to leave the industry, even though farm gate prices for milk are high. Most say they want to leave due to a lack of profit, the workload, age, or the prospect of a good selling price due to the favourable demand outlook for dairy produce. The survey also found that 34 per cent of dairy farmers said their production had recovered from reduced levels due to the drought. The survey found the average herd was 229 cows, with the largest 20 per cent of farms producing 48 per cent of the milk.
