All clear for second stage of Ord scheme
4 Oct 2005

The West Australian government and Miriuwong Gajerrong traditional owners are expected to sign off on the second stage of the Ord River irrigation scheme, bringing to an end a decade-long native title claim. The agreement is expected to give development approval over 65,000 hectares of farmland and national parks to the north and east of Kununurra in northern Western Australia. The agreement clears the way for large-scale cropping on about 33,000 hectares. It will triple the amount of land originally made available for agriculture in the 1960s under the first stage of the Ord scheme.
