No compensation for regulated wetlands
21 Dec 2005

The West Australian government has rejected an independent panel's recommendation to compensate landowners who are barred from developing their land under a wetland conservation program. The panel had proposed to set aside $20 million for the worst-affected landowners. Under the draft Swan Coastal Plains Environmental Protection Policy, about 3000 owners of 23,000 hectares of private property from Guilderton to Dunsborough cannot develop their land as it has been deemed to be wetlands.
