Land clearing laws too inflexible 21 Mar 2006
ABARE says that NSW land clearing laws have cost farmers in the central and west of the state about $1.1 billion in lost production opportunities. ABARE estimates that the cost of conserving native vegetation for western landholders at about $130/ha and the cost for central rangelands farmers at about $1400/ha. The report suggests that with greater flexibility the laws could produce a similar outcome for far less cost. Some graziers were suffering reduced grazing capacity of up to 40 per cent because of restrictions on clearing invasive scrub.
