Farmers paid to conserve land 12 Mar 2007
Agricultural Minister Peter McGauran has confirmed the federal cabinet has signed off on the proposal to pay producers for environmental farming and all that remains to be done is putting a price tag on the scheme. The environmental care package will involve the federal government entering long term contracts with farmers to close off large areas of their properties designated as conservation areas. Mr McGauran said, "The issue now is its funding and I’m going through, obviously, the May 2007 budget process." Contracts may be as short as three years or longer than ten. Mr McGauran said federal bureaucrats would "make an assessment of the flora and fauna of individual farms then write the contract".
