CSIRO warns of coastal danger 6 Aug 2007
A new study by the CSIRO shows that NSW coastal communities are at much greater risk from rising sea levels and storms than had been expected. The latest forecasts estimate that the frequency of storms could increase by 50 per cent and sea levels rise by 12 centimetres more than previously expected. Even if significant action was taken now to cut greenhouse emissions we could still see low-lying areas permanently flooded and beaches and estuaries reshaped by changing sea levels and weather patterns. However the complexity of modelling the environments means that under some scenarios storm frequency could decrease 28 per cent and storm wave height could increase by 28 per cent or even decrease by 10 per cent.
