WA land clearing not monitored
6 Sep 2007

The auditor general of Western Australia, Colin Murphy, has said that it is alarming that the government has no idea how much illegal land clearing is being carried out. In a report Mr Murphy said "There simply is almost no effort at this stage going into compliance and monitoring". Mr Murphy has recommended that the Department of Environment set up a program for investigating potential illegal land clearing when it was clearly identified through satellite imagery and public complaints.
