Green wedge farmers should get a break
6 Sep 2007

A submission to the Victorian upper house inquiry into the development of public land has said that farmers in Melbourne's "green wedges" should not have to pay full council rates as they are providing a service on behalf of the whole city. The green wedges which separate the city's growth corridors include farmland, bushland and grassy plains. In his submission Alan Hunt, a planning minister for the Hamer and Bolte governments, says "The green wedge is not for the benefit of farmers, but of urban dwellers generally. Yet many municipalities with green wedges offer little or no rural rate reduction, whilst others, which have no green wedges, make no contribution to the maintenance of green wedges, although their residents benefit from them."
